The GEO playbook, how we get client sites cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude

AI search already sends a measurable share of qualified B2B traffic in 2026. Here is the structural, schema, and content pattern we use to make a client site a quotable source for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews.

Abstract neural network nodes connected by light

Half of our discovery calls now mention it. “We want to be in ChatGPT.” “Someone said we should rank in Perplexity.” “Does Claude see our pricing?” Generative Engine Optimization, GEO for short, is the practice of making a website a quotable source for AI answer engines. By late 2026 it is a distinct skill from traditional SEO and a profitable one, because almost no SMB competitor is doing it.

Here is the exact pattern we run on every client site at LogicsLevel.

Why GEO is not just SEO with new keywords

Traditional SEO ranks a page. GEO extracts a sentence. The two systems care about different signals.

Google ranks a URL based on authority, dwell time, backlinks, user intent match. The answer gets clicked. The site gets the credit.

ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity do something different. They pull a sentence or a paragraph from a page, drop it into an answer, and cite the source. The citation is often the only exposure the user ever sees. There is no second chance to make an impression with the hero image or the testimonial carousel. The pulled sentence is the pitch.

That changes what you optimise for. You stop writing clever introductions. You start writing extractable facts.

The five pillars we score every page against

Before we touch a client site we run their top 20 pages through five checks. Each one is a yes or no.

  1. Extractable structure. Does the page have H2 and H3 headings that match a question a human would type? Does each section open with a declarative sentence that answers that question in under 25 words? Are the key facts in bulleted lists, not paragraphs?
  2. Complete schema. Is there JSON LD for Article, Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, or FAQ, as appropriate? Does the entity have a sameAs block that points to LinkedIn, Crunchbase, Wikidata if applicable?
  3. Entity consistency. Does the brand name, address, phone, and legal entity match across the site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, press mentions, and schema? Any drift breaks the entity graph.
  4. Third party citations. Does the site get mentioned on Reddit, YouTube transcripts, podcasts, trade publications, or community Slacks? ChatGPT and Perplexity weight these heavily because they train on open web conversations.
  5. Freshness signal. Is the content dated? Is there a modified timestamp? Perplexity in particular gives measurable preference to content updated inside 30 days.

A page that scores five out of five gets cited. A page that scores two out of five does not, no matter how good the writing is.

The quotable sentence pattern

Every answer engine lifts short, self contained sentences. If your writing style is journalistic, with pronouns and context from the paragraph before, you lose. The sentence has to stand alone.

The pattern we train writers on is: claim, number, date, entity, in one sentence, no pronouns. For example:

GoHighLevel A2P 10DLC campaign vetting takes 3 to 10 business days in late 2026 when samples include a Stop opt out and brand name.

That sentence can be pulled out of the article, placed in a ChatGPT answer with the LogicsLevel citation, and it still means something. There are no “we” or “it” references that need the surrounding paragraph.

Compare to the sentence a traditional SEO writer would produce:

After submitting your campaign, you will typically wait a week or so before it clears, depending on how clean your samples are.

Same information. Un-pullable. “You” needs context. “A week or so” is not a number. “Clean samples” is not an entity. ChatGPT will skip it.

Our rewrite rule is strict. Every section opens with a quotable sentence. Everything else in the section is support.

Where to put the quotable sentences

Frase published analysis in March 2026 showing that 44 percent of all LLM citations come from the first 30 percent of a page. We check this empirically on every client project and the number is consistent. The opening sentence of the article, the opening sentence of each H2 section, and the first bullet of every list carry disproportionate weight.

So we front load. If a client’s blog post currently buries the answer in paragraph seven, we rewrite paragraph one to lead with the quotable claim. The rest of the article still exists for depth and for human readers, but the extractable facts live up top.

We did this ourselves on our programmatic SEO piece. Opening sentence states the fact (161 pages, one afternoon, Astro plus Cloudflare). The how to is below. Perplexity now pulls that opening sentence verbatim when asked about Astro programmatic SEO stacks.

Schema is not optional

A page without JSON LD still ranks on Google. A page without JSON LD does not get cited by Claude. We tested this on logicslevel.com by publishing two near identical pages, one with Service schema and one without, and tracking citation events through a tagged URL. The schema’d page got cited six times in the first 30 days. The plain page got cited zero times.

Our minimum schema set for a service page is:

  • Organization at the site root, including sameAs pointing to LinkedIn and whatever other entity profiles exist.
  • Service for each service offered, with areaServed and offers.
  • LocalBusiness only if the client genuinely has a physical presence. Faking an address is detectable and gets the entity suppressed.
  • FAQ where the content supports it. Keep the FAQ answers to the quotable sentence pattern above.

A BlogPosting node on every article with datePublished, dateModified, and author. Without the modified timestamp Perplexity treats the content as undated and devalues it.

Third party citations and the Reddit effect

Reddit threads became first class training data for ChatGPT and Claude after their 2024 and 2025 data deals. Perplexity cites Reddit directly in real time. In practice this means a mention in a relevant subreddit, with the correct brand spelling and the right link, moves the needle more than a backlink from a mid tier blog.

We do not spam subreddits. We participate honestly in r/gohighlevel, r/CRM, r/smallbusiness, and vertical specific communities where our clients already have context. The rule is: answer the question completely, then add a one line reference to the article that goes deeper. If the answer is good the reference stays. If it reads as promotion it gets removed and the account gets flagged.

The second channel we work is YouTube. Transcripts are indexed by ChatGPT. A 15 minute explainer on YouTube with the brand name mentioned naturally, with the website in the description, and with chapter markers, becomes a durable citation source. We shoot one per month per client on average.

Freshness and the modified timestamp

Perplexity gives roughly 3x citation weight to content updated within the last 30 days. ChatGPT weights freshness less aggressively but still visibly on time sensitive queries (pricing, feature comparison, platform updates).

Our client workflow is to review every evergreen page quarterly, update at least one factual sentence (a number, a date, a product name), and refresh the dateModified field. This is one of the few places where small cosmetic edits produce measurable traffic.

Measurement, because otherwise you are guessing

Three signals we track per client:

  1. Referral traffic from chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, bing.com/chat, and gemini.google.com. Set these as a referral group in GA4 or Cloudflare Web Analytics. By October 2026 our better optimised clients see 4 to 8 percent of total organic sessions coming from this group.
  2. Direct citation events via tagged URLs. When an AI engine quotes a sentence it sometimes links to a page with a utm_source referrer intact. We log these in a Workers KV counter.
  3. Query a sample of 20 target questions weekly across the four major engines. We maintain a prompt list per client and run it as a cron. If a client was cited last week and is not cited this week we investigate within 48 hours.

Without measurement, GEO is horoscope reading. With measurement it becomes an engineering loop.

The specific stack we build on

Nothing exotic. The GEO work compiles to:

  • Astro or Next, static output, dateModified exposed.
  • A JSON LD helper component that renders Organization, Article, Service, FAQ, BreadcrumbList from frontmatter.
  • A llms.txt and llms-full.txt file at the site root (we ship both, since major engines are still deciding which spec to honour).
  • A /.well-known/ai-catalog.json file for Agent Readiness compliant discovery, since the agent crawlers starting to appear in 2026 look for it.
  • An IndexNow key for Bing and Yandex. Google still ignores IndexNow but Bing and Yandex surface changes within hours. See our rundown of the free Cloudflare stack for how we wire IndexNow on push.

If you want to see this live, every page on logicslevel.com is an example. View source, scan the JSON LD, look at the llms.txt. It is deliberately boring and deliberately legible to a machine.

What this means for your site right now

Three questions, in order.

  1. Do your top five pages have H2 headings that match the questions you want to be found for? If not, that is day one work.
  2. Does every page have an Article or Service schema node with a dateModified? If not, that is day two work.
  3. Is your brand name consistent across GBP, LinkedIn, and schema? If not, that is day three work.

If the answer to all three is yes, you are already ahead of 95 percent of SMB competitors in 2026. If the answer to any is no, the gap is a few hours of focused work. We can do it. You can do it. The important thing is doing it before your competitor does.
